"World Without Waste". 50 schools in Yerevan are starting to sort waste.

"World Without Waste" program was launched officially at the "Knights of Vardanants" N106 Basic School in Yerevan. The project is implemented within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2021 between the Municipality of Yerevan, "Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Armenia" CJSC and "ISSD” Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Community Development" NGO.

The project aims to improve waste management systems in Armenia by supporting local initiatives with the focus on waste collection, recycling culture, and practical work. The development of a culture of waste sorting among schoolchildren through educational program is important to influence the shift in mindset of people and the effective operation of the waste management system in the community of Yerevan.

"We are launching a program to teach students and their families the importance of waste sorting. I am sure that this project will become the corner stone of a particular culture. "Within this framework of the program, we have already installed more than 200 new sorting bins in 50 schools of Yerevan for separation of paper and plastic waste. An environmental workbook has been developed for the pupils of the 6th graders. In the scope of this project, we plan to conduct trainings on environmental issues in the respective 50 schools, as well as a number of projects and trainings aimed at raising awareness among teachers and students on sustainable waste management," said Mkhitar Avetisyan, the project partner, co-founder-president of “ISSD” Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Development of Communities”.

""Coca-Cola HBC Armenia” attaches great importance to the waste management within the framework of circular economy. This is one of the key pillars of the Company's corporate social responsibility strategy, and the Company implements this particular program all over the world, including Armenia. In parallel, with its business activities, the Company, in collaboration with other representatives of the industry, desires to set up a system where each bottle can be reused and recycled several times. Therefore, we consider our duty to raise awareness among people on the importance of waste management, to promote the culture of sustainable waste management, which we start from school," said Elina Markaryan, Public Affair and Communications Director of Coca-Cola HBC Armenia.

Marine Vardanyan, the Director of "Knights of Vardanants" N106 Basic School in Yerevan, mentioned that the school has been engaged in waste management for many years. "For about 10 years we have been collecting paper waste with the help of the staff and students, selling it and investing the money for the needs of the school. Over the past ten years, classrooms have been renovated, doors and windows replaced, with the money from the sales of approximately 10 tons of waste paper. In addition, we give a second life to antique objects in school."
